Bloomberg reported today that The New York Times is considering charging a $5 monthly fee for access to it's website, www.nytimes.com.
I'm sure a lot of people will be outraged by this, but it's a necessary move on the company's part to keep it in business, and I wouldn't be surprised if this began to be the trend for other online news sites as well.
I'm not opposed to paying for good journalism and I think $5 is fair for a subscription to one of the best newspapers in the world. I believe I paid $52/year for a subscription to Us Weekly in the past (now I get it for free because I work there...suckas.) I pay $15/year for a subscription to New York Magazine mostly because I want to do the crossword puzzle each week. I paid $1 for year-long Glamour subscription...because it cost $1. So, taking all that into consideration, $60/year to read solid reporting so that my mind doesn't go numb reading blogs that basically rip-off the solid reporting seems reasonable to me.
Would you pay?
