Animal Haven Volunteer

I'm not sure if you know this, but I love dogs. I know -- it may come as a surprise to most of you, but dogs are animals that make me happy every day. I see them walking down the street, and they make me smile. I hear them bark and look around to find out what breed it could be. They are great animals and being around them makes me a calmer, happier person.

I don't have a dog of my own mostly because I work too much, go out too much and live in a very small apartment. I want to be able to give a dog a really great life -- so until I can give myself a really great life, I think I'll wait to get a dog.

I do struggle with the fact that there are plenty of animals in New York City that are sitting in shelters, wishing for a good home and someone to love and play with them. I've been considering volunteering at these shelters for a while and finally took the plunge and applied!

I'm extremely excited because I was accepted as a volunteer at a little shelter called Animal Haven. I'm going to begin my 2 hours a week in September. I think it's going to be difficult to see all the dogs and cats without homes - but I'm going to try to make their lives a little bit better by taking them for walks, cleaning their cages and scratching them behind their ears. It's the least I can do for animals that give so much to us every day.
